Is your job dealing with more and more paper work all the time? If you are an office clerk or reports assistant or even if you are a manager you will have to send reports on a monthly basis and more often they will have to do with comparing old and new files as well as updating them. To compare spreadsheet reports, you will have to understand the values being given and consolidate it with any changes made for a certain period of time. If you will be dealing with several files here to compare, you may find this a very daunting task. However, knowing that there is a tool you can use to make this task easier for you is a great relief.
Most of us are familiar with the program known as Microsoft Excel, which is one of the programs that is part of the Microsoft Office Suite. To many, it’s a simple database program that allows you to create spreadsheets for whatever you may need. But if you take the time to learn the ins and outs of this program, you will find it is much more useful. By thoroughly learning this robust software, you can set yourself up for not only success in your job but at home as well.
A lot of portfolio back tests (and their resulting charts) are just silly. Any moron can go into a spreadsheet to find what worked best in the past (especially when cherry picking dates). But it takes some real thinking to work out a strategy that can deal with future unknown risks. You can’t optimize for returns going forward because you don’t know what those returns will be. So anyone designing a portfolio based only on what worked best in the past is making a major tactical error with their investments. A mistake that could destroy a retirement plan.
Generally a high-quality household budget spreadsheet is easily usable by those with elementary computer knowledge having a layout that is understandable and showing most of the details that are required for household management. The other important aspect to be considered while selecting a spreadsheet is the kind of flexibility it offers to user in putting together all the required inputs on income and expenses of the home budget. Some spreadsheets have add-ons like calculator, yearly calendar, savings planner etc, and one can select them based on their requirement of such features. These budgeting tools are very much important in easy monitoring of income and expenses by allowing regular updating of entries without much concern for accuracy.
In the past, the easiest way to share a small database was to create a spreadsheet and email it to your collaborators. This time-tested method has withstood more sophisticated competition for several reasons: First, databases are still tricky for some people to understand. While relational databases can be thought of as tables that have several indexes, this is more than many people want to deal with. Second, the collaboration tools are tough to learn and use. Look at how many people still use Lotus Notes for email and not much else. And since most of us are comfortable with email, using it as the transportation system isn’t all that taxing. Until the day comes when three people are working on the same spreadsheet and make conflicting changes.
By taking the time to master Microsoft Excel, you can increase your productivity to keep your work and your life in order. When you take the time to learn this powerful program, you will be working to achieve a better understanding of all its strengths and capabilities. You will be able to build fast, usable spreadsheets and have a better idea of how to use the software to maximize your own productivity. In addition, since Microsoft Excel is commonly used in office settings, you will help yourself become a valuable asset to your place of employment.
Rather, back-testing can really only show you what DIDN’T work well in the past, so you can avoid repeating those mistakes, or at least be aware of those risks. Back-testing can never prove something will work best going forward. Also, back-testing will never show you extraordinary events, such as civil unrest, unprecedented government intervention in the markets, inflation, etc. These risks need to have some diversification applied as well and the Forever Portfolio actually considers these risks that spreadsheet-only portfolios do not.
