Working in a financial firm would entail a lot of reports to be submitted on a weekly, monthly, semi- monthly, quarterly and a yearly basis. All of these reports should be monitored, and most of the data where these reports come from are based from several spreadsheets that you will have to consolidate in a timely manner. To effectively have these reports updated, you can make use of a file comparison tool that can compare spreadsheet files and allow the user to make changes to it from one file to another.
In the past, the easiest way to share a small database was to create a spreadsheet and email it to your collaborators. This time-tested method has withstood more sophisticated competition for several reasons: First, databases are still tricky for some people to understand. While relational databases can be thought of as tables that have several indexes, this is more than many people want to deal with. Second, the collaboration tools are tough to learn and use. Look at how many people still use Lotus Notes for email and not much else. And since most of us are comfortable with email, using it as the transportation system isn’t all that taxing. Until the day comes when three people are working on the same spreadsheet and make conflicting changes.
Many people don’t realize how functional a spreadsheet can really be and what a program like Microsoft Excel can bring you. Professionally, there are plenty of options available to you depending on your line of work, and the types of data you have to utilize with your job functions. Everything from call sheets that can be highlighted and edited on the fly to database information and management of assets can all be handled through a properly laid out spreadsheet. Many people don’t have a true working understanding of Excel and, due to this, aren’t able to fully utilize all of the functions it can offer you.

Rather, back-testing can really only show you what DIDN’T work well in the past, so you can avoid repeating those mistakes, or at least be aware of those risks. Back-testing can never prove something will work best going forward. Also, back-testing will never show you extraordinary events, such as civil unrest, unprecedented government intervention in the markets, inflation, etc. These risks need to have some diversification applied as well and the Forever Portfolio actually considers these risks that spreadsheet-only portfolios do not.

This is why I find it so absurd when some analyst or pundit claims that an asset like gold is ”worthless” in an investing portfolio because of some biased spreadsheet work they did. I wonder if these people have ever gotten far enough away from their spreadsheets to see how the world markets really work? Having some portfolio insurance like gold around is a really splendid idea. YES, the Forever Portfolio holds gold, silver and displays a good record with other assets likes stocks (mainly ETFs), bonds and cash. But what in history suggests this is not a good idea? Show me the flaw! Show me the data? It doesn’t matter what your chart is showed worked best over a particular time period. The fact is that concentrating your bets is dangerous, and sometimes your stocks and bonds don’t payout on your timetable. This is just how life works. I am finding out more each day. Diversifying a little bit is prudent.
